WHO WE ARE

"IM FOUNDATION IS A PASSIONATE TEAM OF FRIENDLY PEOPLE"
- DIANE M. PORTER, CHAIRPERSON, IM FOUNDATION
IMF

THE IM FOUNDATION HAS BEEN PROVIDING SUPPORT TO INTERFAITH MEDICAL CENTER, BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, CROWN HEIGHTS, AND SURROUNDING BROOKLYN COMMUNITIES FOR 22 YEARS. FIRST ESTABLISHED IN 1993, THE FOUNDATION HAS A LONG TRACK RECORD OF SUCCESS IN FURTHERING THE MISSION OF INTERFAITH MEDICAL CENTER AS A VITAL HEALTH CARE PROVIDER IN THE REGION. THE FOUNDATION IS COMMITTED TO THE HEALTHY WELL-BEING OF BROOKLYN AND ALL OF NEW YORK. THE IM FOUNDATION WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN UNITING THE PEOPLE OF BROOKLYN TO SAVE INTERFAITH FROM BEING CLOSED IN EARLY 2014 AND CONTINUES TO SPEARHEAD A NUMBER OF INITIATIVES AIMED AT PROMOTING COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT WITH THE HOSPITAL.

WE BELIEVE THE FUTURE OF BROOKLYN AND ITS RESIDENTS IS DIRECTLY TIED TO THE LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY OF INTERFAITH MEDICAL CENTER. AS SUCH, IT IS OUR MISSION TO CONTINUE TO MAKE HEARD THE VOICES OF THE COMMUNITIES SERVED BY INTERFAITH SO AS TO PROMOTE THE VITALITY OF THE INSTITUTION AND, IN SO DOING, THE VITALITY OF BROOKLYN.

ACHIEVEMENTS

OVER THE YEARS, THE IM FOUNDATION HAS PLAYED A PIVOTAL ROLE IN CONNECTING INTERFAITH MEDICAL CENTER WITH THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY. BELOW ARE SOME OF THE INITIATIVES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS WE ARE MOST PROUD OF:
IMF
BK health care professionals study health care in Cuba

A GROUP OF BROOKLYN HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS RECENTLY RETURNED FROM CUBA AFTER LEARNING ABOUT THE COUNTRY'S MEDICAL SYSTEM AND HOW IT HELPS PEOPLE.

WORKERS FROM INTERFAITH MEDICAL CENTER, ALONG WITH PROFESSIONALS FROM THROUGHOUT THE BOROUGH, SAY THEY OFTEN DEAL WITH PATIENTS WHO ARE UNINSURED OR UNDERINSURED. THEY SAY STATEWIDE CUTS HAVE ALSO MADE IT HARD TO KEEP THE INTERFAITH MEDICAL CENTER AND A NUMBER OF OTHER HOSPITALS OPEN.

DIANE PORTER, WHO ORGANIZED THE TRIP, SAYS THEY WENT TO CUBA WHERE MEDICAL CARE IS FREE. SHE SAYS THE COUNTRY HAS A MUCH MORE AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM.

IN ADDITION TO BEING MORE AFFORDABLE, THERAPIST JENNIFER SEWALL SAYS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DOCTORS AND PATIENTS IS MORE INTIMATE. SHE SAYS THE DOCTORS KNOW THE CONDITIONS OF EACH PERSON IN THE COMMUNITY.

EXPERTS SAY COMMUNITY DOCTORING IN CUBA HAS HELPED ITS RESIDENTS LIVE JUST AS LONG AS PEOPLE IN AMERICA, BUT AT A FRACTION OF THE COST.

PORTER SAYS THERE IS NO EASY WAY TO FIX AMERICA'S HEALTH CARE SYSTEM, BUT LEARNING ABOUT THE SYSTEMS IN OTHER COUNTRIES IS A GOOD PLACE TO START.

IMF
IM FOUNDATION PARTNERS WITH CPHS

IN MAY 2015, THE IM FOUNDATION ANNOUNCED FUNDING FOR A CRITICAL INITIATIVE TO IMPROVE HEALTH CARE FOR BROOKLYN RESIDENTS. THE IM FOUNDATION COMMITTED $50,000 TO THE COMMISSION ON THE PUBLIC’S HEALTH’S SYSTEM (CPHS) IN SUPPORT OF A FIVE YEAR STUDY TO ANALYZE, MONITOR AND PERFORM CITY-WIDE ADVOCACY IN CONNECTION WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LATEST NYS MEDICARE WAIVER, COMMONLY CALLED DSRIP – DELIVERY SYSTEM REFORM INCENTIVE PROGRAM. CPHS WAS FORMED OUT OF A STRONG BELIEF THAT DECISIONS ABOUT HEALTH CARE MUST INCLUDE PUBLIC INPUT AND ADDRESS THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF NEW YORK CITY COMMUNITIES. THE COMMISSION ON THE PUBLIC’S HEALTH SYSTEM WAS FOUNDED IN 1991 AS A CHALLENGE TO THE BARONDESS COMMISSION. TODAY, CPHS CONTINUES TO MOBILIZE AROUND THESE CONCERNS AND OTHER PUBLIC HEALTH RELATED ISSUES. CPHS ALSO PROVIDES TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, TRAINING AND SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, HEALTH CARE ADVOCATES, PATIENTS AND ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT PUBLIC HEALTH.

IMF
NEPAL REACHING OUT BEYOND

IN THE WAKE OF THE DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKES THAT HIT NEPAL IN APRIL 2015, THE IM FOUNDATION COMMITTED $5,000 TO SUPPORT RESCUE EFFORTS IN THE COUNTRY. INTERFAITH MEDICAL CENTER CURRENTLY HAS 16 NEPALESE RESIDENTS.THE IM FOUNDATION BELIEVES IT IS CRUCIAL TO SUPPORT THESE DOCTORS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEIR FAMILIES AND/OR FRIENDS ARE UNDERGOING SUCH DIFFICULT TIMES.

IMF
THE NEW BROOKLYN THEATRE

IN THE MIDST OF INTERFAITH MEDICAL CENTER'S FINANCIAL CRISIS, NEW BROOKLYN THEATRE REACHED OUT TO INTERFAITH MEDICAL CENTER, AND WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE IM FOUNDATION, WAS ABLE TO OPEN A SITE-SPECIFIC PRODUCTION OF EDAWRD ALBEE’S THE DEATH OF BESSIE SMITH ON JANUARY 9TH, 2014, PERFORMED INSIDE THE HOSPITAL. TICKETS WERE FREE, ALLOWING APPROXIMATELY 3,000 PEOPLE TO SEE THE SHOW, WITH 22 OF 28 PERFORMANCES "SOLD OUT." THE SHOW HIGHLIGHTED THE THREAT OF IMMINENT CLOSURE FACED BY INTERFAITH AND PROVOKED A CITYWIDE CONVERSATION ABOUT HEALTH, RACE, AND CLASS. THE PUBLIC ATTENTION GENERATED FOR THE HOSPITAL WAS PHENOMENAL, WITH THE WALL STREET JOURNAL CALLING IT “ PERHAPS THE CITY’S MOST DRAMATIC BLEND OF THEATRE AND HEALTH POLICY IN NEARLY 30 YEARS.” THE PLAY WAS EXTENDED AN ADDITIONAL THREE WEEKS AFTER BEING SOLD OUT THE INITIAL TWO WEEKS. THERE WERE POST-PERFORMANCE TALK-BACKS WITH ELECTED OFFICALS, UNION REPRESENTATIVES, COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND EVEN HARRY BELAFONTE. WE WERE PROUD TO FACILITATE THE USE OF THE PERFORMING ARTS TO HELP SAVE INTERFAITH FROM CLOSURE IN EARLY 2014.

IMF
LACTATION STATION

IN MAY OF 2014, WE WERE PROUD TO FUND THE CREATION OF BEDFORD-STUYVESANT’S FIRST COMMUNITY WORKSITES FOR WELLNESS LACTATION STATION. IN CONJUNCTION WITH NEW YORK CITY COUNCILMAN ROBERT E. CORNEGY, JR. WE WERE ABLE TO CREATE A CLEAN, COMFORTABLE, AND JUDGEMENT-FREE ZONE FOR NURSING MOTHERS TO NOURISH THEIR BABIES. THE BENEFITS OF BREASTMILK ARE WELL ESTABLISHED, SUCH AS REDUCING THE RISK OF EAR INFECTION, DIARRHEA AND PNEUMONIA. ACCORDING TO THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, 90 PERCENT OF NYC MOTHERS START BREASTFEEDING BUT ONLY 31 PERCENT CONTINUE TO BREASTFEED EXCESSIVELY AFTER TWO MONTHS. THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS RECOMMENDS EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING FOR THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF A BABY’S LIFE. IN 2007, NEW YORK PASSED A LAW, “THE RIGHT OF MOTHERS AFTER NURSING TO EXPRESS MILK” (N.Y. LABOR LAW SECTION 206-C), WHICH ENSURES AN EMPLOYER WILL ALLOW AN EMPLOYEE TO NURSE OR PUMP BREAST MILK FOR HER NURSING CHILD FOR UP TO THREE YEARS FOLLOWING CHILDBIRTH. THE LAW ALSO STATES THAT AN EMPLOYER WILL PROVIDE A ROOM OR OTHER LOCATION, IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE WORK AREA, WHERE AN EMPLOYEE CAN BREASTFEED OR PUMP IN PRIVACY. WE HOPE OUR MAY 2014 RIBBON-CUTTING IS JUST THE FIRST OF MANY IN THE CITY AND OTHER HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS FUND SIMILAR ACCOMMODATIONS FOR NEW MOTHERS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.

IMF
INTERFAITH HOSPITAL STAFF AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH

A LARGE PART OF WHAT WE DO AT THE IM FOUNDATION IS A FUNCTION OF THE WORK OF MANY PEOPLE. BOTH THE STAFF OF INTERFAITH MEDICAL CENTER AND MEMBERS OF THE BED-STUY AND CROWN HEIGHTS COMMUNITIES PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN MAINTAINING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTERFAITH AND THE PEOPLE OF BROOKLYN. TO PROMOTE THE INTERCONNECTEDNESS OF INTERFAITH AND COMMUNITY HEALTH AND WELL-BEING, WE HELP ORGANIZE EVENTS BETWEEN THE STAFF OF INTERFAITH AND THE PEOPLE THEY SERVE OUTSIDE OF REGULAR HEALTH CARE PROVISION. EVENTS INCLUDE THE INTERFAITH FALL FESTIVAL, WINTER WONDERLAND, AND STAFF HOLIDAY LUNCHEONS.

IMF
“IT’S A NEW DAY” MARKETING CAMPAIGN FOR INTERFAITH MEDICAL CENTER

THE YEAR 2013 WAS AN EXTREMELY TRYING TIME IN INTERFAITH MEDICAL CENTER’S HISTORY, HAVING FILED FOR BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION AND UNDER THREAT OF CLOSURE BY THE GOVERNOR, IT SEEMED THE UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES OF BROOKLYN WERE SET TO LOSE ANOTHER HEALTH CARE FACILITY BY EARLY 2014. HOWEVER, DUE TO THE EFFORTS OF A STRONG COALITION OF ELECTED OFFICIALS, UNIONS, COMMUNITY ACTIVISTS, ORGANIZERS, AND THE IM FOUNDATION, WE WERE ABLE TO SAVE INTERFAITH FROM CLOSURE. IN JUNE 2014, FOLLOWING INTERFAITH’S REVIVAL, WE EMBARKED ON A MARKETING CAMPAIGN TO RE-ENERGIZE INTERFAITH’S IMAGE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AND RENEW BROOKLYNITES FAITH THAT THE HOSPITAL WOULD BE AROUND FOR YEARS TO COME.

IMF
EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS ON THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT

THE FOUNDATION SPONSORED AND ORGANIZED A NUMBER OF COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS TO EXPLAIN THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT AND ASSIST BROOKLYN RESIDENTS IN OBTAINING HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE.

IMF
$950,000 PRE AND POST PETITION AWARDS

The Foundation donated $200,000 for a pre-petition malpractice fund and $750,0000 to support the creation of a post-petition medical malpractice litigation fund in support of the doctors and medical professionals serving at Interfaith Medical Center before and during the time of the bankruptcy. The Foundation was instrumental in helping to create the covered persons fund.
